Requirements

-     A “qualified person” under the Legal Profession Act, with preferably at least 7 years of relevant legal work, particularly in civil litigation and dispute resolution and/or criminal law

-       Strong legal competence and excellent judicial temperament

-       Professionalism, strong interpersonal & communication skills and a team player

-       Familiarity with the judicial work at the State Courts is an advantage

You will be expected to deal with the full range of judicial work across all clusters at the State Courts:

(A)       Criminal Courts

You will preside over criminal trials in areas including commercial crimes, offences against persons and property, drug and regulatory offences.  You will rule on criminal liability and sentence offenders, conduct judicial inquiries and employ problem-solving approaches to deal with specific categories of offenders (such as those who are young or have mental conditions).  

(B)       Civil Courts

You will preside over civil trials and originating applications which span the full spectrum of civil disputes before the State Courts.  You will hear applications for injunctive, declaratory and other urgent reliefs. When dealing with challenging cases and/or novel points of law, you will have the opportunity to develop local civil jurisprudence. 

(C)       Office of the Registrar

You will conduct judge-led case management conferences, assisting parties to identify and focus on key issues in dispute and giving directions for the expeditious conduct of proceedings. You will adjudicate on interlocutory matters in civil and criminal proceedings. You will have the opportunity to participate in judicial reform and other policy initiatives.

(D)       Court Dispute Resolution Cluster

            You will manage civil claims to achieve early and economical resolution of cases without the need for a trial. Employing judge-driven case management strategies, you will conduct Early Neutral Evaluations of the merits of cases and direct the negotiation process. You will also conduct judicial mediation to facilitate win-win solutions between parties.

(E)       Community Courts & Tribunals Cluster

          You will be at the forefront of delivering justice to the average citizen, managing and adjudicating civil claims and criminal offences arising out of economic and relational disputes in Specialist Courts and Tribunals.  These include cases under the Community Disputes Resolution Act, Employment Claims Act, the Protection from Harassment Act and the Small Claims Tribunals Act.
